There was a problem with the rear-speakers plug, that miserable cheap cable of mine was mixing the two rear channels, one of which was playing the center channel. I've finally dicovered the channel order of the mencoder output ac3! I'd like to do the same with the mencoder output file, but it is even more twisted and complex. So now I can play it with this command, which re-routes the channels I mean that the lfe sounds in the front left channel, etc. The outputfile.ac3 won't play well with the plain 6 channel command, but I've found out that it plays with this channel order: LFE, C, R, SR, L, SL. Then I make the new ac3 with less bitrate:įfmpeg -i inputfile.ac3 -ab 224 outputfile.ac3 Then I start extracting the ac3 stream out of the ripped vob files:Ĭat /ripped_dvd/*.vob | mplayer -dumpaudio -dumpfile inputfile.ac3. That's what I call the L, R, SR, SL, C, LFE channel layout, and that's what I'm trying to achieve with the new ac3 files. The front channels play in the front speakers, the surround channels play in the rear speakers, and the center and lfe channels play in their respective speakers. Mplayer -ao alsa -channels 6 -dvd-device /ripped_dvd dvd:// I'll try to be clear about the channel order issue: when I play a ripped dvd with this plain vanilla six-channel mplayer command I've managed to figure out the ffmpeg ac3 channel order, and so I can play it right. Well, I'm slowly beginning to see the light.

I'd never had any problems with the ac3 files I encoded with Besweet in windowz, other than the poor quality.Īlgunos son humildes porque no les han dado la oportunidad. The same applies to the finished avi or ogm movie. Mplayer -ao alsa -channels 6 -rawaudio on:format=0x2000 outputfile.ac3Ĭhances are that the front channels will sound in the rear speakers, the center channels sounds in the front right speaker, and one rear channel sounds in the center speaker. I am utterly unable to play them properly on my 5.1 soundcard. Well, both methods work and the mencoder one is more flexible, but the output ac3 files are intrinsically different from the input files. Mplayer -dumpaudio -dumpfile outputfile.ac3 frameno.avi In another thread we've discussed methods to encode dvd audio to a 5.1 ac3 file.įfmpeg -i inputfile.ac3 -ab 128 outputfile.ac3Ĭat /ripped_dvd/*.vob | mencoder -channels 6 -ovc frameno -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=224 -aid 128 -o frameno.avi.
